Edward Porter, Jr

Age: 98
Edward James Porter, Jr., a lifelong resident of Leonard, passed away June 22, 2014. He was 98.

He was born October 3, 1915 the son of Edward James and Blanche (Robeson) Porter in Leonard. Edward graduated from Romeo High School in 1935 where he held the record for the 100 yard dash from the mid-1930s to the mid-1990s.

He married his loving wife Lucille Baza on June 17, 1939 at the Leonard United Methodist Church. He retired from General Motors Truck and Coach in Pontiac in 1973. Edward was one of the founding fathers of the Addison Twp. Fire Department and served as chief. He was also the Leonard Village President, Village Marshall as well as a church leader at the Leonard United Methodist Church and Leonard Community Church. Edward enjoyed woodworking and gardening.

He is survived by his Loving children Janet Ostrander of Leonard, Linda (Wesley) Douglas of Leonard, Stephen (Jan) Porter of Oxford, and Cindy (Jerry) Bawks of Perry. He is also survived by 13 grandchildren, 22 great-grandchildren, 4 great-great-grandchildren and three special nephews. He is preceded in death by his parents, his wife Lucille Frances Baza, his sisters; Vivian Gabriel, Marion Sutherby, Beryl Patch, great-granddaughter Stacey Terry, son-in-law James Ostrander and his special Friend Lucille Bishop.

A Funeral Service was held on Wednesday, June 25, 2014 at the Leonard United Methodist Church (254 Elmwood – Leonard). Pastor David Gerber of Heart to Heart Hospice officiated.

Rosealee Cusksey

Died: Sunday, June 22, 2014
Age: 91
CUCKSEY, ROSA LEE of Lake Orion; June 22, 2014; age 91. Beloved wife of the late Morris. Dear mother of Jon (Christine) of Harrison Township, Chris (Susan) of Novi, and the late Suzy; loving grandmother of 9 grandchildren; and 14 great-grandchildren.

Rosa Lee was a member of the Lake Orion United Methodist Church and Church Street Singers. She was also an avid fan of the Detroit Tigers.

Funeral services will be held on Friday, June 27, 2014 at 11:00 am at Lake Orion United Methodist Church. Interment Ottawa Park Cemetery. The family will receive friends on Thursday from 4 to 8 pm. at SPARKS-GRIFFIN FUNERAL HOME, Lake Orion (248-693-8336).

WILSON, Josh of Holly; formerly of Clarkston; unexpectedly June 21, 2014 due to a car accident. Loving father of Ayden Wilson (8 months old); Fiance of Kirstyn Schatz. Son of David and Janet Wilson. Brother of Nathan Wilson. Grandson of Jim and Harriet Wilson. Also survived by many aunts, uncles and cousins. Josh graduated from Clarkston High School in 2012. He was currently employed with Odyssey Industries, Lake Orion. Elizabeth DeBoer

Age: 96
Elizabeth Elsie DeBoer, of Oxford, passed away on June 21, 2014. He was 96.

She was loving wife of the late Paul and the dear mother of Donald (Arlene) DeBoer, Patricia Nichols, the late Joan Metzger and the late James DeBoer.

She is survived by her loving grandson and caregivers Daniel (Rhonda) DeLoy. She’s also survived by many grandchildren, great, and great great grandchildren.

A funeral service will be held on Wednesday, June 25, 2014, 7:00 p.m. at the Modetz Funeral Home (100 E. Silverbell Rd.) in Orion Township. The family will receive friends from 5 p.m. until time of service.

Burial will be 12 noon Thursday at Chapel Hill Memorial Gardens in Grand Rapids.

Harold Dodds

Died: Thursday, June 19, 2014
Age: 96
Harold D. Dodds, of Oxford, passed away on June 19, 2014. He was 96.

Born on February 2, 1918, he was preceded in death by Hattie, his loving wife of 43 years, five brothers and one sister. He is survived by his son Jerry and special helper Gail, and granddaughter Kim (Jim) Schywstell. of Pennsylvania.

Harold was an Oxford Police Officer from 1949-1954 and retired from Oxford School System as custodian after 13 years. He was also a veteran of the Navy, a volunteer fireman for the Oxford Fire Department for 41 years and a lifetime member of the Oxford Masonic Lodge. He will be sadly missed by family, many friends and neighbors.

A funeral from Lynch & Sons Funeral Directors in Oxford was held Monday, June 23, 2014. Pastor Bob Service officiated.

Interment was at Ridgelawn Cemetery in Oxford. Memorials may be made to the K-9 Stray Rescue League, 2120 Metamora Rd, Oxford, MI 48371.

Ruth E. Freeman

Died: Thursday, June 19, 2014
Age: 90
Freeman, Ruth Elizabeth, age 90 passed away peacefully on June 19, 2014 after a prolonged illness. Ruth was born in Gladstone, Michigan on July 23, 1923 to Swedish immigrant parents Louis and Agda Danielson. After the death of her father, she was raised by her mother along with older sister Viola and brother Louie along the shore of Lake Michigan. Her dear cousin Naomi was more like an older sister to Ruth and constant companion to Ruth and Viola.

A graduate of Gladstone High School class of 1942, Ruth moved to the lower peninsula to attend Cleary Secretarial College. She met her future husband James Freeman. After WWII they married and raised four children.

Ruth worked as an Executive Secretary at Shwayder Brothers and Wyandotte Chemical which became BASF. While working, she volunteered at Wyandotte Hospital & St. Hugo of the Hills in Bloomfield.

In retirement, she was committed to giving back working at St. Joseph hospital ER, the Scripps Center, and the Lake Orion Township Library. Post retirement she enjoyed part time jobs at Swede Annes and Always Christmas in Lake Orion.

Ruth enjoyed walking her dog Holly 2-3 times a day in any kind of weather & visit with neighbors. She would cross-country ski every winter until the age of 85 and was an avid reader.

Ruth is survived by her four children: son James Freeman & wife Cynthia, son Michael Freeman & wife Kathy, daughter Lori Potter & husband Don and son Lance Freeman & wife Kelly. Her greatest joy was loving nine grandchildren (Erin, Kate, Joe, Kristen, Laura, Jason, Shawn, McKenzie and Benjamin) and being ”GiGi” to four great-grandchildren (Evan, Aiden, Donavon and Kory).

A Memorial Mass will be held Friday, June 27, 2014, 11 a.m. with an instate time of 10:30 a.m. at St. Joseph Catholic Church, 715 N. Lapeer Rd., Lake Orion. Memorial visitation Thursday, 3-8 p.m. with a 7 p.m. rosary at the Modetz Funeral Home, 100 E. Silverbell Rd., Orion. Inurnment Eastlawn Cemetery.

Leo Vaillancourt, Jr.

Died: Wednesday, June 18, 2014
Age: 86
Leo Vaillancourt, Jr., of Clarkston, formerly of Pontiac, passed away June 18, 2014, at age 86.

He was the husband of Phyllis; father of Stephen (Kathy) Maddock, Michael (Marta) Vaillancourt, James (Jeannie) Vaillancourt and Pamela (Dennis) Kas; also survived by 13 grandchildren and many great grandchildren; brother of Richard (Rosemary) Vaillancourt; preceded in death by his daughter Cynthia (Richard) Durso, grandson Jason Maddock, brother Robert (Marelyce) Vaillancourt, parents Leo and Mary “Marie” Vaillancourt.

Leo served in the U.S. Coast Guard during WWII and served as an Orchard Lake Police Officer. He retired from General Motors, Plant Protection.

Private family graveside services at All Saints Cemetery have been held. Arrangements entrusted to Lewis E. Wint & Son Funeral Home, Clarkston.

Scott W. Evanson of Clarkston, formerly of Rochester; passed away suddenly June 14, 2014 at age 53.

He was beloved husband of Karen; loving father of Amanda (fiancé Tab Wood), Samantha and Alyssa; papa of Morgan; son of Marlene (Ron) Smisek; preceded in death by his father Walter Dean; brother of Brian (Diane) and Jeffrey (Jackie); son in law of Dolores (the late Cecil) Pelowski.

Scott was employed as Project Manager at IM Branded, Rochester Hills.
