Mary Katherine Martin

Died: Thursday, October 02, 2014
Age: 96
Born Mary Katherine (Katie) Martin, November 7, 1917, she peacefully fulfilled her time on earth at home on October 2, 2014. She was the daughter of Chester McFarlane and Mary McAlpine Martin. Growing up in Highland Park, Michigan, and attending St. Joseph’s Episcopal School, Katie graduated from Highland Park High School, and later graduated from Harper Hospital School of Nursing. Subsequently she earned her Registered Nurse Certification, State of Michigan, in 1941.

Katie met Dr. Aaron (Ron) Robinson Edwards and after a courtship they were married in 1941. While Ron was serving as a flight surgeon during WWII, Katie with pride used her nursing skills being employed by Dr. Henry whose office was in the Fisher Building, Detroit. Katie and Ron’s first “war project” child, Martin “Mars”, was born during his absence. After Ron returned from the war, the family moved to Pittsfield Village, just outside Ann Arbor. Katie worked actively as office manager and nurse with Ron after his private pediatric practice was established in office space added on to their home on Church Street in Ann Arbor.

Together Katie and Ron had five children: Martin (Catherine), Karon, Bruce, David (Deborah), and Lucinda. Katie was active, giving, and took leadership positions in the St. Joseph’s Hospital Auxiliary and the local chapter of the American Cancer Society. A fire in 1958 took the lives of her husband Ron and their daughters Karon and Lucinda. Striving courageously to hold her remaining family together, Katie extended her nursing career continuing to work as office nurse in the practice previously owned by herself and Ron.

In the mid-sixties she began a life of world travel, skiing, and yachting. She lived in homes in Ann Arbor, Key Biscayne Island, Singer Island, and West Palm Beach Florida.

Katie was always known for her mannerly and gracious entertaining of friends and business acquaintances. She brightened the surround with her distinctive giggle. She was always willing to lend support to her children, and her brothers Archibald and Jamie and their families as well as making contributions to many charities and church funds.

Katie is survived by her sons; grandchildren Aaron, Alexandra (Mark) Montgomery, Christian, Doria (Luke) Thome, Ian (Maria), Schuyler (Jamie), and Scott Magers; and nine great grandchildren.

Internment will be with her husband Ron and their two daughters at Forest Hills Cemetery, Observatory Road, Ann Arbor. Memorials will be appreciated to Hospice or the American Cancer Society. Arrangements entrusted to the Lewis E. Wint and Son Funeral Home, Clarkston. Online guestbook www.wintfuneralhome.com
